Low Level Light Therapy Before and After Refractive Surgery or Cataract Surgery

LLLT can be utilized to improve refractive measurements before refractive surgeries like LASIK and biometry measurements before cataract surgery in patients with meibomian gland dysfunction.  LLLT has also been found to alleviate symptoms of dry eyes after surgery in patients with pre-existing condition of tear dysfunction.

What is Light Modulation LLLT?

Light Modulation® LLLT is a unique technology of photobiomodulation (PBM) used since many years in various fields of medicine (e.g., dermatology, dentistry). The emission of a particular light at a certain wavelength triggers an endogenous heating of the eyelids. This treatment facilitates the spill, from meibomian glands, of the oil component of the tear film, thus stabilizing the lipid layer of the tear.

Contraindications

pregnancy
light induced nervous system disorders like epilepsy or migraines
pacemaker
gold implants in the upper eyelid
photosensitivity to red or yellow light
presence of nonremovable metals in the treatment area
presence of skin cancer in the treatment area

Pre and Post Treatment Instructions

Before the Treatment
The following need to be removed prior to the treatment:
hearing aids
earrings and other metal piercings
makeup and eyelash extensions
contact lenses
If you are taking photosensitizing medications, consider having the treatment 1-2 weeks after your last dose of the photosensitizing medication.

After the Treatment
After removing the mask, it is normal to have altered color vision (more blue/green) for minutes.
LLLT generates endogenous heat, and there will be a warm sensation that may last up to 3 days. This may be accompanied by increased tear production.

Temporary redness on the treated area may also occur.

Avoid sun exposure, UV exposure, and the application of self-tanning products for 3 days after the treatment.

To minimize sun/UV light exposure, apply sunscreen when outdoors.
