Low Level Light Therapy for the treatment of Blepharitis
Blepharitis is characterized by inflammation of the eyelids. It is related to dermatological conditions like acne rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis, bacterial eyelid infection, eyelash mites, meibomian gland dysfunction, and dry eyes. It is often a chronic condition and can have complications like eye infections, corneal ulcers, eyelid malposition and eyelash loss.
LLLT: Blue and Red Mask
Blue light energy from the mask is absorbed by molecules called porphyrins, which are found within bacteria. These molecules then generate oxygen radicals that break the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death.
Red light energy, on the other hand, decreases inflammation by regulating anti-oxidant defenses and reducing reactive oxygen species. It also leads to improved cellular metabolism by increasing ATP production in the mitochondria.
What is different with the blepharitis protocol for LLLT?
The treatment sessions are twice as long for blepharitis due to the combined use of the blue mask and the red mask.
